Guitarist and ethnomusicologist Mike Allemana will host historian Timuel Black, saxophonist Jimmy Ellis, and vocalist Margaret Murphy-Webb to discuss the history of segregation in Chicago and how conditions of racial separation have shaped cultural activity surrounding jazz past and present. They will consider the rich past of South Side jazz venues, the present scarcity of performance opportunities, the changing dynamics of musical and social interactions with white musicians and fans, and the types of cultural activism needed toward revitalizing jazz in South Side neighborhoods. Through the panelists’ experiences as culture bearers and activists, this panel aims to be a critical examination of the complex social realities at the intersection of race and music in Chicago.
