En 2019, estudiantes del Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy en Pilsen protestaron contra CHM por su falta de representación Latina en las galerías. Siguiendo los pasos de sus antepasados quienes lucharon en contra de la borración cultural y el racismo sistémico.

La resistencia al estatus quo puede manifestarse de forma abierta, como protestas por una educación y una vivienda justa, mientras que otros actos son más sutiles, pero igual de eficaces, como la conservación de recetas familiares, lenguas indígenas y prácticas espirituales. Chicago ha sido el hogar de comunidades latinas desde el siglo XIX. Sus descendientes han mantenido y protegido activamente la herencia cultural y las tradiciones latinas. Hoy en día se mantienen firmes frente a los sistemas y políticas de opresión y siguen Aquí en Chicago.

A través del arte, fotografías, entrevistas, vestimenta, artículos personales, objetos cotidianos y tesoros históricos, Aquí en Chicago recorre las vidas de las comunidades latinas que se han mantenido firmes frente a la opresión, manteniendo una presencia cultural persistente y floreciente en Chicago y los suburbios de sus alrededores.

In 2019, students from Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy in Pilsen protested CHM for the lack of Latino/a/e representation. In doing so, they stood on the shoulders of past Latino/a/es and allies who fought against cultural erasure and systemic racism.

Resistance to the status quo can be overt, like protests for fair education and housing, while other acts are more subtle but just as powerful, like preserving family recipes, native languages, and spiritual practices. Chicago has been home to Latino/a/e communities since the 1800s. Their descendants have actively carried on and protected Latino/a/e cultural heritages and traditions. Today they stand firm in the face of systems and policies of oppression and remain Here in Chicago—Aquí en Chicago.

Through art, photographs, interviews, clothing, personal items, everyday objects, and historical treasures, Aquí en Chicago traces the lives of Latino/a/e communities that have maintained a persistent cultural presence and flourished in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

The exhibition is presented in both English and Spanish.
