Alanna Huck-Scarry: The Promise of Spring
@ DePaul Richardson Art Gallery
2350 N. Kenmore Ave., Chicago, IL, 60614
Opening Wednesday, October 1st, from 4:30PM - 6PM
On view through Thursday, November 13th
In her solo exhibition, The Promise of Spring, Alanna Huck-Scarry investigates how one’s attention to nature can alter perceptions of time and comfort fears of impermanence, lack of control, and fragility.
The Promise of Spring consists of recent works by Huck-Scarry made using, and in response to the flora of the American Midwest. After a lifetime among midwestern prairies, northern Michigan forests, and the wildflowers that line I-94, Huck-Scarry attempts to embrace the continual unknowing and relearning of her environment that accompanies close-looking, slow rumination, and constant curiosity.
This exhibition includes works of handmade paper sculptures, naturally dyed paintings, and knit mohair.
This is Alanna Huck-Scarry’s first solo exhibition and her first exhibition at her alma mater, DePaul University.

Alanna Huck-Scarry (b. 1996) is a visual artist who seeks to explore the natural world by drawing attention to the beauty of the sometimes-forgotten and often dismissed detail of her environment. Her work is directly inspired by her home in the American Midwest, particularly northern Michigan and Chicago, IL.
Her work is both a material investigation – whether it be with natural dyes, handmade paper, found objects, or knit forms – and a personal endeavor to understand the ephemeral world around her. One such investigation includes experimentation with natural dye; as time passes, the colors bleed and shift, and her pieces depict the world around her: unpredictable and every-changing. Most recently, Huck-Scarry has been confronting anxieties surrounding death and lack of control through an exploration of material longevity and fragility.
Huck-Scarry is a recent graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she earned her MFA in Fiber and Material Studies. She is also an alum of DePaul University where she earned her BA in Art, Media, and Design. When not exhibiting in shows across the Midwest in places like Illinois (Positive Space Gallery and SAIC Galleries, Chicago, IL, 2025), Michigan (Good Hart Artist Residency, Good Hart, MI, 2024 and 2025; Krasl Art Center, St. Joseph, MI, 2019), and Missouri (Art Saint Louis, St. Louis, MO, 2019), she enjoys teaching art classes to Chicago-area students.
