Liberation Lab invites cohorts of formerly incarcerated artists to create art-activism tools to address critical issues around the criminal legal systems that impact them, their families and our communities. Liberation Lab cohorts research, design and create engaging projects to educate the public around these topics and support campaigns for social change. We lean on the phrase “people closest to the problem are closest to the solution”. We use this framework as a starting point and also invite other (not formerly incarcerated) artists who are part of social justice movements. In addition, where we need skill-based support (i.e. how to make block prints) we will bring in a teaching artist to help lead the cohort through skill building exercises.

Our current cohort is working to create a screen printed portfolio to accompany the No New Prisons IL and Build Communities Not Prisons campaign. The goal of this campaign is to stop the state from building a new, 900 million dollar prison (but it will certainly cost more) and instead imagine what 900 million dollars can do in our communities. Our goal is to make at least 75-100 portfolios to distribute to each artist in the cohort and to organizations across the south and west sides of Chicago. Our aim is to educate the public about the impending prison construction using the portfolios and urge the public to imagine what safety really looks like. We will ask organizations who receive the portfolios to hang the art in their spaces, host conversations about stopping the prison construction, and where possible, we will wheat paste the portfolios in public places.
