606 Da Vault

@ Walls Turned Sideways

2717 W Madison St, Chicago, IL 60612

Opening Friday, September 26th, from 6PM - 9PM

606 Da Vault brings together 8 graffiti artists from Southside Chicago including Werm, Yeso, Mongo, Neto, Curse, Shoe, Skeam, Klown and Pork. The artists will show individual work and a new collaborative project created for the gallery at Walls Turned Sideways. The title of the exhibition references hidden gems throughout the city, as the subculture of graffiti artists depends on anonymity. Organized by Nick Morfin (aka Mongo), artists in the show met through mutual networks of commissioned work and various graffiti crews. Many artists got their beginnings tagging gang signs but became more interested in developing their own style and work.

Some artists in the show were incarcerated in Illinois prisons for years and decades and they continued their practices while inside. Graffiti art was one way to stay positive while doing time, but also changed the way they worked. While the walls in prison could have used some color — anything other than the drab colors of prison — spray paint is not allowed. So the artists created their work on paper and in sketchbooks. 606 Da Vault showcases work made throughout these artists lives, illustrating their ability to hustle, survive, and make sense of their experiences: life without parole, time lost, loss of friends or family and art as a tool to heal.
