Art City is excited to present Poikilotherm by Chantal Danyluk, our Monthly Installation Artist in Residence for August. Chantal Danyluk is a studio artist at the Bridgeport Art Center with an established presence in Chicago’s contemporary art scene. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the Chicagoland area, including solo shows at the Leslie Wolfe Gallery and the One River School of Art in Evanston, as well as a two-person exhibition in Rock Island. She has also participated in group exhibitions across the Midwest, including in Missouri, Michigan, and Indiana.
In Poikilotherm, Danyluk embraces the term’s meaning (an animal whose body temperature depends on its environment) to explore mental health through the lens of swamp-like escapism. The large-scale oil paintings feature animalistic elements like crocodiles and frog legs as metaphors for different human emotional experiences. Her surreal, large-scale figures cut out of plywood celebrate neurodiversity and explore mental health issues. Drawing from the natural world, she creates parallels for the challenges of navigating everyday life while under mental duress.
