Show Statement:
In my artwork, I strive to describe and celebrate the complex, often invisible, experience of being human. As a person with a bend toward anxiety, my instincts tend to fling me back and forth between the overwhelm of chaos and illusions of control. That is until the day a friend shared with me words that changed my life: there’s always a third way.
This simple phrase reminds me of the potential for choice, creativity, and complexity in each present moment. Using environmental imagery, inherited fabric, vibrant colors, and built-up layers, I imagine what Personhood might look like if it were a place all its own. The process of healing, unearthing (and choosing how to carry) half-remembered histories, and the blurry boundary between the end of me and the beginning of you… all woven and knotted together into a landscape that describes aspects of the human experience that can’t be seen in a mirror or photograph.
These paintings are my way of rejecting the rigid black-and-white thinking our current systems tempt us to embrace, flinging us between chaos and control. I choose the complexity within, exploring it like a map that can lead us into a more curious and compassionate world that knows, without a doubt, there is always a third way.
