THE PLAN is pleased to announce 2-3 Weeks, a two-part international exhibition in partnership with Gallery 350 in Malé, Maldives. Opening on two continents on July 18th, the dual exhibition spair the work of select Chicago and Maldivian contemporary artists. The curators of 2-3 Weeks selected six pairs of artists, one from Chicago and the other from Maldives, and encouraged them to make new work in response to the other’s content and subject matter. Similar to a call and response, the two galleries are both showing work by six local artists alongside a conceptually responsive artwork made by their international counterpart.
The exchange and indirect collaborations of paired artists in 2-3 Weeks were guided by differences in the rhythms of the Chicago and Maldivian cultures, the paces of our day-to-day, our relationships to art, and the ethos of our practices. This exhibition is built on resonance and
response across distance, time, and limited context.
The varied practices of the 12 artists in this show span the intuitive and the structured, the solitary and communal. They investigate forests, oceans, domestic rituals, collective disorder, drifting, swimming, and charting. Some turn to improvisation to expand the possibilities of
writing; others work through repetition, rhythm, and material. Across these varied approaches each artist engages in an act of translation, where meaning is continuously negotiated between material and image, sender and receiver, language and form.
The title, 2–3 Weeks, refers to the average time it takes to send a package between these two places. A subtle reminder that distance, delay, and disconnection are not barriers but part of the
exchange itself.
