Slaps! Vol. 4

@ Elephant Room Gallery

720 S Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL 60605

Opening Saturday, May 31st, from 5PM - 9PM

On view through Saturday, June 21st

Elephant Room Gallery is proud to present “Slaps! Vol.4”, a sticker exhibition curated by artist Isamar Medina. This year’s exhibition is co-curated by Kimberly Leja Atwood and opens on Saturday, May 31st and runs through June 21st. The show opens with a reception on Saturday, May 31st from 5 to 9pm. Thank you to Dark Matter Coffee for sponsoring the evening!

Isamar Medina first curated the Slaps Show in 2018 at a DIY space and continued to exhibit the show online during the pandemic and at various venues since then. Taking a short break as she welcomed a new addition to her family, Isamar is now bringing the exhibition back. Her curatorial process is carefully thought out as it’s important to her that she work with other women in the arts and/or non-profits who are working to elevate underserved communities and inspire meaningful connections.

The Slaps Show brings together artists from a multitude of backgrounds and levels, all creating pieces on priority mail labels that are 5 3/4 inches x 4 1/2 inches and sold for the same price point of $40. This unique exhibition allows for first time collectors or new collectors to acquire a piece by an artist whose price points may normally be out of reach. For Isamar, affordability is the most important part of curating this show. “I, like many people, grew up with parents who didn’t collect art. I don’t think it even crossed their mind. So, I can understand how it can be intimidating for people who never had art growing up to get into collecting art. It’s important to support our creatives because a lot of them grew up in these households too and they should know there are people who love their work and want to support what they do.” – Isamar

The hype around the show each year is widespread, reaching artists well beyond Chicago. Because of the accessible nature of the work and the large number of artists involved, artists tend to push the boundaries of what they can do on a “slap”. Some will incorporate familiar characters while others may experiment with new techniques. Whatever they decide, the show will definitely provide an exciting and diverse display of work.

The artists for this year include Abraham, Ahree Robles, ALEROART, Amber Bas, Amliv Sotomayor, Angel of Peace, Anna Lisa, Anthony Bartley, Asheru, Austy Universe, Birdmilk, Blake Jones, Brent Ozaeta, Camille, Chad Edwards, China Cat 663, Chris Orta, Claire Gunville, Cristi López, Crush Entity, Cujo Dah, Czr Prz, Danny Martinez, Darin Latimer, Didi, Dirty City Pigeon, Ethan Dyckman, Ewrks, Fantasía Ariel, Fedz, Gabe Soto, General Lucifer, Goosenek, Hailey Losselyong, Harebrained, Hink !, Isamar Medina, Ish Muhammad, Ivan Vazquez, James Eastwood, James Sturnfield, Jeff Pak, Jerome Tiunayan, Jettila Lewis, Joesky, Jonathan Carradine, Jon Ski, Jourdon Gullett, KABZ, Karen Mooney, Kenny Muerte, KIND, Koni, Kristel Becares, Kurk Kreissl, Liz Merritt Kong, Markas Odom, Melissa Villarreal, Michael Roy, Miss Erotic Rat, Molly Mendoza, Moons, Morgan Nicolette, ND1B, Nez, Nitness, Norma Ojeda, Ocean Müerto, Oliv Roe, Ozzzie, Paola Seeley, Penny Pinch, Queer Punk Filipinx, Quiralta, Radah, Rawooh, Recee Rembert, Reddor Santiago, Reno Msad, Richard Ticas, Rine Boyer, SCRLT MRMLD, Sean Patrick Hannaway, sentrock, Shawnimals, SAIN, Shydoe, Squeak Starzula, Stef, SteGo., Steven Zapiain, Tala Furniss, Terrible Tony, Tim Seeley, Tom Cranston, Total Bannerchy, TotesFerosh, Undead, Underseagravy, Valeria Terrazas, Valerie Von Rubio, Verloe, Veronica Martinez, Villatose, Vivian Le, Won Kim, Yams, Yew, Yuqing Zhu, Zeye One & Zor Zor Zor!
