Collaborators:

Yiwen Wu is an artist-scholar. She is currently a PhD student at the University of Chicago, in the joint program between Theater & Performance Studies and East Asian Languages & Civilizations. Yiwen finds her passion in amplifying Asian voices on contemporary stages, from translations and adaptations of classical works to new plays that explore what it means to be Asian in modern America. As a playwright-director for puppet plays, her credits include Sattva (Special Recognition Award at the 2024 Wuzhen Theater Festival), The Story of Lady Li (Recipient of Jim Henson Foundation’s Artist Grant), and Living Rock (Nasty, Brutish, & Short at the 2024 Chicago International Puppet Festival). Her dramaturgical credits include Black Bear Island (Silk Road Rising), Lucy and Charlie’s Honeymoon (Lookingglass Theatre Company), Akutagawa (Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival), and The Chinese Lady (TimeLine Theatre Company). Her new play dramaturgy credits include Eve (Silk Road Rising), F*ck House (Strawdog Theatre Company), Tomato Tattoo (APIDA Arts Festival), Red Fortune Cookie (Bramble Theatre Company), Hungry Ghost Festival (Lifeline Theatre), and The Feet of God (TimeLine Theatre Company).

Dear Asian Youth (DAY) at UChicago is a student organization dedicated to empowering Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) youth and promoting intersectional activism, political engagement, and action in the APIDA community in Chicago (and beyond!). To do this, DAY builds partnerships with diverse groups and organizations, increases awareness about APIDA issues, and celebrates APIDA cultures.

Michelle Du is an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago studying Law, Letters, and Society and Data Science. She loves going to art museums, cultural showcases, and music/dance performances: a fun fact is that she danced traditional Chinese dance growing up! Serving as DAY Co-Outreach Coordinator allows her to connect with various community-based organizations around Chicago and further her passion for civic engagement.

Sadie Darbro is a third-year student at the University of Chicago, majoring in Global Studies and minoring in Geographic Information Science. She is interested in film and film criticism, as well as listening to all genres of music. After growing up in rural Kentucky, Sadie feels that DAY has been the first Asian American community she has been a part of, and she loves the opportunity to serve it through her role as Co-Outreach Coordinator.
