IJOL FIELDS
(I JUST BURST OUT LAUGHING)
It is an exhibition exploring internet culture, digital identity, and the absurdity of online language. Originating as a meme—phrase used to describe moments of uncontrollable laughter—IJΘL Fields has evolved into a landscape for human, internet aesthetics, and my life.
For years, I’ve researched the intersection of internet culture, identity, and art, drawing from theorists like Legacy Russell, Manuel Arturo Abreu, and Martine Syms. My practice engages with memes, digital photography, print media, wheat pasting, and custom wallpapers to investigate how we shape ourselves in online spaces. Internet language, deeply influenced by Black and Queer online meme culture, is a key reference in my work as I examine my own mixed identity in the post-internet era.
This exhibition at Happy Gallery expands IJOL Fields into a physical space, creating the third space between a digital and physical landscape. The installation consists of repurposed advertisements, boards covered in memes and sunflowers, photographer prints, vinyl banners, and IJΘL Fields. Through layered visuals, text speak, and immersive imagery, the space transforms into a chaotic yet inviting environment that suggests a space to contemplate our understanding of internet imagery. I invite viewers to lose themselves in the field, embracing the joy, dissonance, and unexpected beauty of contemporary online culture.
