A line generally conveys the feeling of thinness. Thinness, like smallness, is relative. The extreme ratio between length and breadth of a shape makes a line, but there is no absolute criteria for this.

Three separate aspects should be considered in a Line:

The Shape — This refers to its general appearance, which is described as straight, bent, irregular, or hand drawn.

The Body — As a line has breadth, its body is contained within two edges and the relationship between them determines the shape of the body. The two edges of the body can be smooth and parallel but they can appear tapering, knotty, wavy and irregular.

The Extremities — These may be negligible when a line is very thin. But if a line is broad, the shapes of its extremities may become prominent. They may be square, round, pointed, or any simple shape.

Postscript: My parents listened repeatedly to the American Country singer, guitarist, and songwriter, Glenn Campbell on the hi-fi when I was very young. Glenn Travis Campbell (1936-2017) had no use for lines because he did not learn to read music. Wichita Lineman (1968), a song written by Jimmy Webb for Campbell could be heard in my upstairs bedroom at bedtime. I did not know what “Wichita” was but I was confident that a lineman was the person who drew the lines in coloring books. Even to an elementary school kid who had little comprehension of its references, the song was very beautiful. A British music critic asserted that it was the first existential county song. I wanted to be a lineman.
