During this presentation, art historian and curator Antawan I. Byrd will explore the centrality of sound technologies to the politics and visual culture of Pan-Africanism, focusing in particular on the aesthetics of loudspeaker technologies such as soundsystems, boomboxes, and other machines of public address. Byrd’s talk will also preview Project A Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica, a forthcoming survey exhibition he’s co-curating at the Art Institute of Chicago opening in December 2024.
