My 100 Day Community Art Project
My impetus to establish Slacks Window Gallery in 2019 was to create a public art interface for those who may not be inclined to enter an art gallery.
On February 18, 2024, I joined #100dayproject along with many other folks on Instagram. I chose to do something that would take me outside my studio and into the world around me. I created two flags, one with Gladstone Park (my home neighborhood) and a second with a blank space to fill in the neighborhood or city where the people I met live.
Over the next 100 days, I attempted to do this every day but found myself approaching multiple people some days and none at all on others. In the course of the 100 days I traveled around the city, to the suburbs of Chicago, Iowa, Indiana and Alaska. It was a rare occasion that when asked someone would refuse to participate.
The secondary part of the project was that I gave participants a hand self-addressed envelope with an index card inside with the question “What does a neighbor mean to you?” written on it. Of the 154 images I took, 70 participants returned the cards with their answer to the question. Most did not sign their answer or provide a return address so I often did not know who wrote what reply (my numbering system was not foolproof, I realized). So I chose to randomly assemble the responses with various neighbor images.
