@ West Town Chamber of Commerce

1819 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622

Opening Friday, September 6th, from 6PM - 9PM

On view through Sunday, October 6th

The West Town Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce The Valley of Cathedrals, a show of works on paper by Ukrainian Village resident Duncan Robert Anderson, to be exhibited through the WTCC’s Member Exhibition Space program. The Valley of Cathedrals opening on September 6, 2024 will align with September’s West Town First Fridays, and the exhibition will be on view at the Chamber’s headquarters through October 6, 2024, to align with the 14th annual West Town Art Walk from October 4-6, 2024.

Growing up in East Tennessee, Anderson was inspired by the “vast, primeval mountains” that marched on around him in every direction. In such a landscape, the veil between worlds often felt thin. The Valley of Cathedrals represents Anderson’s private cartography, informed by his familial, marital ties to the spirit-rich landscapes of Japan, the Appalachia of Anderson’s youth and the gilded domes and soaring steeples of Ukrainian Village, where Anderson has lived since 1998. “In this valley of cathedrals, I’ve made my work and life, where oracles of ministerial ghosts and old gods linger among the treetops and sentinel spires glinting in the sun,” Anderson said.

On the first Friday of every month, participating galleries stay open late for West Town First Fridays to allow visitors of all ages to explore West Town by means of a self-guided gallery walk. Participating galleries for September’s First Fridays can be found on this map. More details about the West Town First Fridays gallery participants and programming can be found at westtownchamber.org/west-town-first-fridays.

Further, the closing of The Valley of Cathedrals exhibition on Saturday, October 5, will align with the neighborhood’s annual West Town Art Walk from October 4-6, 2024. Established in 2011, the West Town Art Walk celebrates the diverse community of businesses in West Town while highlighting Chicago artists. The mission is to showcase West Town as a rich cultural hub that has much to offer residents, visitors, and business owners alike.
