Juan Molina Hernández: para no desaparcer (not to disappear)
Sonnenschein/Albright Gallery, Durand Art Institute

The Art and Art History Department at Lake Forest College is pleased to announce para no desaparecer (not to disappear), a solo exhibition by the Jan Feldman Artist-in-Residence, Juan Molina Hernández.

For the past several years, Molina Hernandez has constructed a body of work exploring ideas of memory, protection, hechizos, home, family, and un/belonging. During the residency, supported by the generosity of alumnae Jan Feldman ’75, the artist spent time creating new work and planning site specific installations that will activate the Sonnenschein Gallery, the Albright Gallery, as well as other parts of the Durand Art Institute.

In para no desaparecer (not to disappear), Molina Hernández employs diverse techniques, materials, and mediums, including installation, photography, video, embroidery, hair, and glass shards. Many of these techniques and mediums draw directly from the artist’s upbringing. For example, glass shards reference the self made security feature of broken glass bottles found on top of concrete and brick walls surrounding homes in the artist’s hometown in Guanajuato, Mexico.
