Hidden Genius: Jack Scott’s Monumental Art Rediscovered After Decades

Circa Modern & MGH Art – one weekend in Chicago

Chicago, IL – A true art sensation is about to hit Chicago this summer. After working in obscurity for over 40 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, the groundbreaking work of visionary artist Jack Scott is being exhibited for the first time in decades, “When Things Were Real, Drawings by Jack Scott.” This blockbuster show promises to be a revelatory experience, allowing audiences to discover an overlooked master whose large-scale, meticulously-rendered charcoal drawings fuse minimalism and abstract expressionism in a uniquely captivating way.

The exhibition, curated by MGH Art and hosted by Circa Modern – a gallery specializing in vintage, modern- furniture and lighting, dedicated to restoring and preserving this important design period – will be held at Design at 329, located at 329 West 18th St. Ste. 507 in Chicago. It opens with a special preview reception on July 12th from 6-10 pm, giving patrons an exclusive first look at Scott’s long-hidden artworks.

The collection, which includes over 20 original artworks, offers a peek into the artistic brilliance of Jack Scott. Scott’s intricate freehand arcs create heroic-scale charcoal on canvas works, some as large as 83″x177″ and charcoal-on-paper drawings sized 30″x40″. According to RMcD from ARTweek, ‘In these works Scott introduces illusory depth either through opening negative space or through creating nebulous contours. The pieces are reductive yet rich: sensitive yet muscular. Individually and as an environment they create the sort of mood associated with the painting of Mark Rothko.’

Michele Hembree, the exhibit’s curator, expressed her elation at being able to finally share Scott’s genius with the world. “Jack Scott is truly ahead of his time. His intricate freehand drawings are a hidden gem that deserves to be celebrated. This exhibition will be a transformative experience for anyone who appreciates true artistic vision and mastery.”

With buzz growing around rediscovered artists, especially those working in minimalist styles, this unprecedented show is poised to be one of the summer’s biggest art events in Chicago. Don’t miss your chance to experience Scott’s buried brilliance firsthand from July 12th-14th at Design at 329.
