About In-Session

A remix of the traditional lecture or panel, In-Session is a critical interdisciplinary salon that incorporates reading, conversation, and performance together. The salons are focused on a selection from a shared reading list which is compiled based on a theme. After the conversation on the selected works, it is activated by performance and participation—music, song, poetry, dance or movement. This season’s theme is Bearing Witness.

We contemplate what it would mean to bear witness to that which makes our soul sing. How do we cultivate the courage to witness radical possibilities for others and ourselves? Through communal witnessing, how might we dream up practices and worlds that have yet to come into being? By bearing witness to that which is most authentic and life-giving to our humanity, we allow ourselves to remember what we always recognized to be true inside of us. We hold fast in knowing that thriving in the layeredness of everyday existence is, in itself, an act of resistance.

Sobre En-Sesión

En-Sesión es una remezcla del conversatorio tradicional. Es una charla crítica e interdisciplinaria que incorpora lecturas, conversaciones y performance. Los conversatorios se enfocan en una selección de lecturas basadas en un tema específico. Después de una discusión sobre las lecturas, la charla es activada por un performance y la participación de les asistentes en forma de música, canción, poesía, danza o movimiento. El tema de esta temporada se llama “Atestiguando”.

Contemplamos lo que significaría el ser testigues de lo que hace canta a nuestra alma. ¿Cómo cultivamos el coraje para ser testigues de las posibilidades radicales para nosotres y otres? A través de el ser testigue en comunidad. ¿Cómo podemos soñar con prácticas y palabras que aún no existen? Siendo testigues de aquello que nos es más auténtico y que le da vida a nuestra humanidad, nos damos permiso para recordar lo que siempre hemos reconocido como verdadero dentro de nosotros. Nos aferramos en el saber que el prosperar en las muchas facetas de la vida cotidiana es un acto de resistencia en si mismo.

Jamiece Adams and Erma Ishara present: The Porch – Places of Belonging

EarthBound. (Ishara and Jamiece) extend an invitation to our neighbors to the imagined space of the porch, informed by bell hooks’s Belonging: A Culture of Place.

Bearing witness and practicing civility is rooted in knowing someone is true and exists. Be guided through this practice as we explore the invitation, get rooted in nurturing, and release through the departure. While in reflection with us over this imagined space, the porch, neighbors will bear witness to our process of grounding the group in the concept of belonging and opening themselves up to be witnessed in return.

Jamiece Adams y Erma Ishara Williams presentan: El Pórtico – Lugares de Pertenencia

EarthBound. (Ishara y Jamiece) extienden una invitación a nuestres vecines a entrar al espacio imaginario de el pórtico, informado por el libro de bell hooks Belonging: A Culture of Place (Pertenecer: Una Cultura de Lugar).

El atestiguar y la práctica del civismo están enraizados en el saber que alguien es real y existe. Déjense guiar en esta práctica mientras exploramos esta invitación, nos enraizamos en lo enriquecedor y dejamos ir a través de la partida. Mientras estamos en reflexión en este espacio imaginario, el pórtico, vecines serán testigues de nuestro proceso de conexión grupal en el concepto de pertenecer, y se abrirán a que otres sean testigues de elles.

About the artists

Jamiece is a gender-expansive educator, writer, and creator. Their written work has been published in Hypertext Magazine, the Lambda Literary Fellowship Anthology, and elsewhere. She is the founder of the Swish Queer Basketball Club an organization that provides a brave space for QTBIPOC folks to play ball and build community.

Erma Ishara (they/he) is a transmasc artist and community organizer. Their work uplifts building spaces for gender-expansive transformation through education, community care and media. As a published poet, writer, and creator of The FemmeBoi, they are committed to promoting and creating content centering the experiences of queer BIPOC communities.

Sobre les artistes

Jamiece es una educadora de género expansivo, escritora y creadora. Su obra escrita ha sido publicada en la revista Hypertext, la antología Lambda Literary Fellowship, entre otras. Es la fundadora de el Swish Queer Basketball Club, una organización que provee un espacio seguro para personas QTBIPOC que quieren jugar y construir comunidad.

Erma Ishara (elle/el) es un artiste trans masculino y organizadore comunitario. Su trabajo enfatiza la construcción de espacios para la transformación de género expansivo a través de la educación, el cuidado comunitario y los medios. Como poeta con obra publicada, escritore y creadore de The FemmeBoi, están comprometides a promover y crear contenido que centra las comunidades BIPOC queer.

In-Session Programming will be in hybrid format (presented in-person and on Zoom). There is limited capacity and we will utilize a waitlist to manage interest that exceeds our attendee count. Salons will recorded for archival purposes and photographed for documentation. Spanish interpretation will also be offered.
