The CLEAT Series focuses on work composed for the 16-channel speaker system in our space, allowing audiences to experience different approaches to spatial audio. For this special second CLEAT Series event of March, we welcome back two alumni of the series. NYC-based artist Michael Schumacher will present a set of multichannel pieces called “Stills”, from a series of that explores the idea of auditory scene analysis within an immersive sound environment. Texas-based Derek Rogers is back with his exploration of electronic composition, drone, free-improv, ambient, and noise textures. We’ll have the CLEAT system operator / CLEAT Series curator Stephan Moore presenting new work to open the night. Join us!

Artist Bios

Based in Brooklyn, Michael J. Schumacher has innovated in the areas of spatial sound and algorithmic composition since the 1990s, creating immersive “Room Pieces” presented in galleries, museums, concert halls, public and private spaces. “Living Room Pieces” is a generative installation designed for home listening. The “PM-cSS” is a complete 8 channel sound system that fits in a suitcase. Schumacher studied music composition with Stanley Applebaum, John Eaton and Vincent Persichetti and piano with Seymour Bernstein and John Ogdon, and has degrees from Indiana University and Juilliard. He also worked with La Monte Young and Milton Babbitt. He has collaborated with choreographers, poets, architects, musicians and filmmakers including Oren Ambarchi, Bruce Andrews, Tom Chiu, Zorica Colic, Charles Curtis, Liz Gerring, Ken Jacobs, Victoria Meyers, Ursula Scherrer, Sally Silvers and Stephen Vitiello. His recordings are available on Superpang, XI Records, Entr’acte and Sub Rosa, among others.
