The Boldness of Being: Natalie Jackson and Natasha Giles Somerville
February 9 – April 4, 2024
Curated by Monica J. Brown
Natalie Jackson:
Pieces of struggle and peace of joy bond to shape my artwork.
My photography and collages are rich and empowering
tapestries of life…past, present, and future. They allow me to
fuse triumph and strength into every seam, always highlighting
resiliency.
Being bold and embracing the imperfections of life creates a
stronger Being. Continuing to stand despite all obstacles is a
testament to the strength of my ancestors that propels me
throughout my journey.
Natasha Giles Somerville:
My work explores the images we post in social media spaces. I’m drawn to the perception of reality we have adopted on these platforms; who we are or the persona we wish to present to others. In turn, my work deals with the figure in visually textured and layered spaces. I create paintings that investigate the combination of representational imagery, abstracted space, texture and color. My goal is to capture the personality and character exuded in a captured moment; highlighting the person that often lies below the surface. What intrigues me is the illusion of time, the unspoken communication of body language, and the idea of what is real authenticity.
