Developing an idea for an exhibit rises through our experiences and consciousness as we explore artists locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. The zeitgeist of our times is paramount to helping us decide the topics and themes we choose to work with. We seek to create a dialogue between the artists we are working with and layered meaning and intent in the works we exhibit to create a satisfying viewing and learning experience for our audience.
The exhibit curators state: “Neighbors are everywhere, and our relationship with our neighbors is tenuous. Some of us have been lucky enough to have that perfect neighbor who became a lifelong friend, sharing milestones and the challenges of life and living—or the neighbor we never entirely understood or liked. Still, for years, we lived next to that person or family, peacefully and sometimes not so peacefully, coexisting.
Neighbors is a group exhibition of work by eight Midwest artists who examine society and relationships within and the complex conditions that color people’s experiences. Highlighting figuration, it’s about people we walk by or see from a distance or lend a helping hand. The purpose of the exhibition is to inspire an appreciation for the concept of neighbors from next door to other countries, continents, and beyond; we’re all in this together.”
“The underlying message of the Neighborhood is that if somebody cares about you, it’s possible that you’ll care about others. ‘You are special, and so is your neighbor’— that part is essential: that you’re not the only special person in the world. The person you happen to be with at the moment is loved, too.” —Fred Rogers
