Melissa Oresky and Judith Mullen: Thicket
@ Color Club
4146 N Elston Ave, Chicago, IL 60618
Opening Saturday, November 4th, from 3PM - 6PM
Please join us for the opening reception of Thicket, A two person group show with Melissa Oresky and Judith Mullen, on November 4th from 3pm to 6pm. Thickets will be open for public viewing in Color Club’s Museum space at 4146 North Elston Ave.
Mullen’s sculptures and paintings, whorl, creep and climb, with the accidental grace that is so extremely hard to force, and yet is found all the time in the great beards of lichen, and gnarled roots of a living tree. Glossy resin, yarn, crusty paint and even glitter are transmuted into abstractions whose unlikely material quality nevertheless truthfully simulates the mysterious logic of something growing.
Oresky’s paintings, and objects begin with research and an inquiry into the nature of learning and knowledge, from a non-human perspective. Does human language assist our understanding of flora, or does it instead function as a hindrance, a thicket of concepts and words and biases through which we stumble? Plants communicate, what does their understanding of writing or language entail? The surfaces of Oresky’s paintings and sculptures are roughened with handmade paper pulp and tactilely complicated by difficult to untangle layers of collage.
Thickets is a show in which two artists plunge into a world greater than human. Where abstraction, painterly sensibility, and elaborate technique lead us into a forest of visual language, and the weird and wonderful space of the Color Club Museum is transformed into a thicket of aesthetic objects contemplating the wisdom of nature.
