Body Language is a new choreographic work by dancer Meredith Dincolo originating from her collaboration with historian Tara Zahra. The work engages the potential for bodily movement as a language, taking cues from the personal histories of the dancers to develop its vocabulary and scope. From this source material comes an abstract work that explores and challenges the role of dance in our greater histories as a means of expression, reflection, and memory. The piece further considers how we craft our personal histories by constantly processing and filtering our lived experiences in an effort to choose what we reveal both publicly and privately. Our bodily movements, both designed and improvised, can act as a lens for these stories that we tell ourselves and others.

Free and open to the public.

This work comes about from a Collaborative Fellowship at the Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry. Dincolo and Zahra (Professor of History and Director of the Neubauer Collegium at the University of Chicago) have come together to examine the intersections of dance and history, as well as the role of dance in history. This creative process has been motivated and influenced by research in both the studio and in the classroom, made possible by the generous support of the Gray Center.
