Paintings will never hurt you

@ The Plan

610 N Albany Ave, Chicago, IL. 60612

Opening Friday, October 6th, from 6PM - 10PM

On view through Sunday, November 5th

Under the digital condition, how is the state of painting altered, and what does painting do? Shot through with code, floating nebulously as data, reproduced endlessly through pixels, how do these conditions alter the painting medium and open new paths of meaning? Painting has long been a site to test new ideas, a vast uneven terrain where materials, image-making and body interface. In Paintings will never hurt you, Alex Both, Atticus Gordon, and Jonathan Worcester reach into the increasing entanglement of painting with ubiquitous digital experience. All three artists variously probe the aesthetics and mechanics of online platforms, integrate software-based image-making, and explore the visceral relationship between the body and technology. The exhibition is rooted in the contradictory relationships we form with technology simultaneouslyqq we: yearning for meaning, para-social, and reverential. Following the logic of digital technology writ large, the digital is ever-present, sometimes overt other times hidden and covertly kneaded into the material of paint in search of meaning.
