South Asia Institute is proud to present a captivating panel discussion that delves into the fascinating world of indigo. Join us for an illuminating conversation featuring renowned experts in the field – Professors Lisa Trivedi, and Laura Kina, together with artist Shelly Jyoti, as they explore the intricate mosaic of indigo’s historical significance and its contemporary global artistic relevance. Laura Kina, the curator of the exhibition “Indigo: The Blue Gold,” will moderate the discussion, as Shelly Jyoti and historian Lisa Trivedi share the mysteries of indigo and textile art.
About the moderator
Laura Kina is Vincent de Paul Professor in The Art School and an American Studies, Critical Ethnic Studies, Global Asian Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies affiliated faculty member. Kina is an artist-scholar who specializes in painting, contemporary art, and ethnic studies. Kina’s artwork focuses on themes of distance, belonging, the fluidity of cultural differences, and the slipperiness of identity.
About the speakers
Shelly Jyoti is a visual artist, fashion designer, poet, and independent curator whose work references the cultural context of Indian history. She is trained as a fashion designer at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, and she earned her MA in English with American Literature from Punjab University, Chandigarh.
Lisa Trivedi, a cultural and social historian of modern South Asia, received her doctorate from the University of California at Davis. Trivedi is Christian A. Johnson Professor of Teaching Excellence and History at Hamilton CollegeHer first monograph, Clothing Gandhi’s Nation: Homespun and Modern India (Indiana, 2007) was supported by a Fulbright Scholarship to India in 1996.
