Abandoned Practices Public Presentations 2023
July 26, 1 p.m. CST In Person and Streaming via LUMPEN TV
280 S. Columbus Dr., room 012
Twenty-Four participants of the three-week summer course devoted to abandoned practices and endangered uses have been engaged in research, performance, installation, and writing projects, with teachers Matthew Goulish, Lin Hixson, and Mark Jeffery, and teaching assistant Flo Woolley. This year’s visiting scholars were Amina Cain and Zihan Loo.
After 15 years, this will be our last Abandoned Practices Public Presentations. You are invited to attend in person live presentations on Wednesday, July 26th 2023 @ 1PM, 280 Building, 012 (basement), or online via LUMPEN TV. Devised in response to subjects from our archive of Abandoned Practices, The Voder, Ducking Stool, Brickfield and Stenotypy, four 18-minute presentations each weave a series of strictly timed original trios and solos. In alternating presentational modes of expert demonstration, traveling exhibition, and entertainment performance, forms adapted from the Chautauqua Assembly, a traveling rural adult education institution, the popularity of which peaked in the late 1800s, these performances share the theme of useful knowledge. The two visiting scholars contributed the performance modes of a memory of heat and a future biography of an object.
