gather-seize
The Catacombs
March 10, 2023 to April 22, 2023
In gather-seize, Michelle Stone embraces ambiguity, enigma and the shadow side of how an artist creates. Having grown up in a family of artists and freaks, these things feel familiar to Stone, and are concepts she revisits throughout her work. Stone has spent her art life creating paintings and sculptures that question the human condition about what all nature shares in common: growth, transformation, and decay.
This body of work is the extension of her own organic evolution over time. Focused on constructing photos and collages of random relationships that spoke to some part of her subconscious or intuitive experience, every image originates from pieces of her actual existence. By fusing content and structure, she attempts to invent an internal dialogue; and from this, one basic, personal story can emerge. Only after these pieces ascend from her memory and imagination does the painting process begin.
This exhibition will be on display in the Catacombs alongside the exhibition DOUBLE/FORCE.
