Cold/Heat Migration
The Sacristy Gallery
February 3, 2023 to Mar 18, 2023
Through simplified contour shapes, like silhouettes of birds, a cut-out doll, a dress or an article of clothing, artist Jonathan Ricci’s work takes its form from childhood images and memories of an innocence lost. Although he has always considered himself a figurative artist, Ricci’s artwork has roots in traditional painterly abstraction. In Cold/Heat Migration, the works are often symbolic portraits, a personal narrative of family and close friends.
He has found further inspiration from many residencies and visits to Iceland. The minimal or even absence of darkness, the sunsets and sunrises within minutes, and the late-night rainbows: all inspired and helped to influence new color schemes and palettes. Many of the paintings have collaged images, notes, and letters associated with an individual. Travel documents, maps, and images of the bird life familiar to Iceland were incorporated into each of the paintings. The image of the Arctic Tern, the Oystercatcher, and the Raven appear in these works as a symbol of Skagaströnd’s important role as a breeding ground for migratory birds.
