Special Feature is thrilled to present the work of Kelly Kroener & Malik Purvis . An immersive installation that combines the artists’ practices using materials from both Kroener (Cincinnati, Oh) and Purvisβs (Chicago, IL) respective locations. The exhibition will serve as a geological and historical portrait of two different Midwestern landscapes focusing on mental illness, climate change and colonial corruption of lives, land and water.
Kelly Kroener (she/her) grew up in rural South Western Ohio. She lives, works, teaches, studies, and collaborates throughout the Midwest and abroad. She works in textiles, installation and site specific works that investigates place and the human relation to the natural world. Her work has been noted in Art In America, Glasstire, CityBeat and the Economist. She heads the non-profit gallery BasketShop with her partner Eli Walker. She completed a BFA in fashion at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2022.
Malik John-Marc Purvis (they/them) is a Chicago native, artist and educator who primarily works in image based media that uses concepts driven from mental illness and perceptual psychology to produce paintings that both question and portray the myriad of depictions and visual stimuli brought on by it. Having matriculated in 2016 at University of Illinois Champaign Urbana (UIUC) they studied both Painting and New Media attaining both degrees with a minor in Art History. During their time at UIUC they studied both under a French school of painting at IAU: France (Institut AmΓ©ricain Universitaire) and the psychology department studying perceptual psychology. They later finished their studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art in May of 2021.
