@ National Museum of Mexican Art

1852 W 19th St, Chicago, IL 60608

Opening Saturday, June 18th, at 1:30PM

On view through Sunday, July 24th

Join us for a free Gallery Talk with curator Dan Ramirez and artist Rubén Aguirre. The two will walk guests through current exhibition Tectonic Reflections sharing how they worked together over the past four years to present the exhibition

For Aguirre, the natural landscape is a source of inspiration for his abstract paintings. By building on the visual language of his urban murals, his current studio work has generated a new dialect where reduced shapes and colors speak of terrestrial forms.

After shifting his art practice into a warehouse studio in 2019, the natural landscape continued to be a source of inspiration for Rubén Aguirre (b. 1979). By building on the visual language of his urban murals, his current studio work has generated a new dialect where reduced shapes and colors speak of terrestrial forms. Rendered as abstract topographies, his wood panel paintings invoke poetic contemplations on origin, self-awareness, one’s connection to the Earth, and our impermanence. These abstracted meditations on exhibit collectively reflect on the unforgiving tectonic forces of nature while remaining ambiguous and peripheral.
