Master drummer Avreeayl Ra presents a bi-weekly workshop series on spontaneous composition in January and February 2022. Avreeayl Ra was Elastic’s inaugural Elastic Achievement Award recipient in 2018 for artistic excellence, innovation, the defiance of boundaries, and his contributions to the broader creative community. His musical journey has spanned more than five decades, from early work with Phil Cohran’s Artistic Heritage Ensemble, to the Sun Ra Arkestra, an extraordinarily durable partnership with Ari Brown, innumerable collaborations with the luminaries of the AACM and other great improvising musicians in Chicago and around the world. Now a renowned elder, Avreeayl has decided to create a workshop series so that more people can benefit from his experience and profound perspective on the relationship between sound, practice, heart, and inner attainment. Avreeayl will be joined by special guest musicians and interlocutors each week.
