the foul lump in my throat is one we feel before we know to examine. It signals a kind of melancholia that besets when dreams of wild freedom give way to a quiet reality of otherness. Under a West Texas sun, stephanie mei huang takes viewers on a journey of migration, immigration, and exclusion. We glimpse freedom, find humor, and yearn for a way to reset the landscape.

Where are the Chinese cowboys?
stephanie mei huang employs videos and sculptural installations that demonstrate how the freedom of cowboyhood relies upon exclusion—the kind that yields to alienation; and the foul lump in my throat also carries the hope that there may be remedies.
stephanie mei huang was born in Wausau, Wisconsin and currently lives and works in New York, NY. Marfa, TX; Yokohama, Japan; Shanghai, China, and Los Angeles, CA have all been home to huang as well. She received her MFA from California Institute of Arts, Valencia, CA and a BA in Media Studies with a minor in Poetry from Scripps College, Claremont, CA. She is a current participant in the Whitney Independent Study Program, New York, NY.
