Kelly Reichardt, 2020, 122 min, DCP Digital
Set among the fur trappers, immigrants, and entrepreneurs of a fledgling Oregon settlement in the 1820s, Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow observes the casualties of capitalism through a tender tale of friendship. Cookie (John Magaro) and King-Lu (Orion Lee) are outsiders seeking fortune in a nascent colonial society; as their paths cross and a companionship forms, they create a business around Cookie’s knack for baking. With a secret recipe that depends on milk stolen from a wealthy Englishman’s cow, Cookie and King-Lu’s enterprise grows more precarious with success. For Reichardt, First Cow is about “the very beginning of the story of commerce, before America is really even America.”
