Marginalia is a reinterpretation of sculptures originally installed on the Illinois State Museum’s former grain building site along the I&M canal. Carrelli’s gently swaying resin wheat stalks will lure viewers around the edges of the meadow and farm field, providing moments for contemplation, like the decorative marginalia of illuminated manuscripts. The sunlit ghostly forms give a provocative nod to the grain’s past agricultural prominence in the region as well as its symbolism of prosperity and rebirth.
Steven Carrelli is a Chicago-based visual artist and writer. He holds an MFA in Painting from Northwestern University and a BA in Studio Art from Wheaton College. His works have appeared in many publications, including the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Reader, New American Paintings, Art Scene Chicago 2000, and Time Out Chicago. His awards include a Fulbright Grant to Florence, Italy, as well as grants from the Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Union League of Chicago.
