@ Firecat Projects

Opening Friday, September 24th, from 7PM - 10PM
On view through Saturday, October 23rd
Firecat Projects is pleased to present In Your Face, a solo exhibition of abstract portraits by painter and performer Dimitri Pavlotsky
The exhibition begins with an opening reception with the artist on Friday, September 24 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Pavlotsky turns the traditional genre of portraiture inside out, depicting only the non-figurative interior component of the subject. His bold, emotion-driven abstractions explore movement of subconscious energy. They are intuitively built on the interplay of structure and whimsy. The structural approach comes from the artist’s academic education back in his native Russia and the previous career in architecture. The whimsy reflects the artist’s thirst for free-flowing artistic performance free of learned lessons and rules.
Pavlotsky grew up in Moscow and has been based in Chicago since 1994. In Russia, he pursued a rigorous traditional academic education, achieving an MFA degree at Moscow Institute of Architecture in 1986 and receiving several prestigious national design awards. Yet, he felt that his technical abilities, favored by the culture, limited his desire to explore a more emotive, fuller means of expression. He was introduced to modern art while studying architecture in Moscow and expanded that exposure while attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. These studies allowed Pavlotsky to immerse himself in the possibilities of experimenting with visual languages. Pavlotsky left his successful architectural career in 2018 to concentrate fully on his studio practice of painting.
His recent solo exhibitions include “Conversations Beyond Language” at Springfield Art Association (2021), “Venturing Out” online (2020), “Transformation” at Legion Arts (2019), “Let the Game Come to You” at Gallery Orbit (2018), “Every Single Line Required” at Gallery Krug (2017), “Raw Emotion” at Harold Washington Library Center (2017), and Dissonance” at Gallery Studio Oh! (2015).
All events are free and open to the public.
