ARTIST STATEMENT:
My new show “Quarantina” represents the output during the pandemic lockdown and thereafter (March 2020-July 2021). The theme of automatic portraiture and the history and nature of application and palimpsest with floral forms informed much of the work as a means to mete out the pressure of separation from other people and public spaces populated with living things. The development of my preoccupation with provisional painting, planarity, and pareidolic participation of the viewer can be seen in most of the composition, as I continue to see my painting as an agonistic and ecstatic process of discovery and intuitive expression, like a sudden scene of wildflowers or an exchanged glance that fosters sonder.
On some of the paintings, my children provided some expressionistic brushwork (specifically some of the floral underpainting) for which they shall receive 33.3% profit of the sale. It has been truly a joy to watch them work and talk and negotiate as the paintings developed during our time in lock-down, my lovely artists.
