In 1880, George Pullman set about designing the first planned industrial community in the United States. The neighborhood was built specifically for the employees of his Pullman Palace Car Company, which developed, manufactured, and manned the railway car on the lines—cars that would accommodate the travels of 26 million people at the company’s peak in the early twentieth century. To attract and retain quality employees, the neighborhood featured more than 1,000 homes designed to accommodate each worker level, green spaces, carriage paths, and a train depot.
