Nov 7th 2020

These are strange times and in spite of it all, we want you to know that your work is incredibly important to us and helps shape our own practices as artists, thinkers, and friends. As such, we want to honor this feeling formally and would love to invite you to attend in person and/or view remotely an exhibition entitled Exhibitionisms. This group exhibition is arranged by Nicole Mauser, Sheila Majumdar, and Tobey Albright. It will run from November 7 to December 13, 2020, concurrently at Tiger Strikes Asteroid and Space & Time galleries, in Chicago, IL.

We have invited more than 20 artists to lend one of their own artworks, along with an object from their personal collection. Exhibitionisms will present arrangements of these artworks and objects in orbit. By documenting the objects’ shifting placement for two virtual openings and the exhibition catalogue, we engage the mechanisms of publication-as-exhibition-making to combine the material and digital realms (as a choreographed performance of sorts). By arranging new adaptations of artworks/objects, we hope to unlock, identify, and share mutualisms to create new potential meanings. Think of it as a house party of objects that lasts over a month—a celebration of physical exchange in a time of encouraged distance.

At Exhibitionisms closing event on December 13, we will release an exhibition catalogue in the form of an electronic publication housed inside a handmade artist book-like object. The e-pub features a digital archive of the entire collaborative exhibition effort, including in situ images of the artworks and objects prior to their journey to the respective galleries.

Exhibitionisms will take place simultaneously at two locations: TSA and a new storefront gallery in Chicago called Space & Time. We will celebrate with an online opening, some light programming and texts, plenty of documentation, and an e-pub with experimental aspirations. We will begin taking reservations for in-person visits beginning on November 7, here. Regardless of whether you choose to encounter this exhibition online, in person, or not at all, our admiration for your work remains.

Fondly Yours,
Nicole Mauser
Sheila Majumdar
Tobey Albright

Bios:
Nicole Mauser’s paintings and installations have been exhibited at rK Gallerie Lichtenberg (Berlin, Germany), Carrie Secrist Gallery (IL), The Arts Club of Chicago (IL), and others. Permanent collections include the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (KS) and The Alexander (IN). She was a HATCH resident at the Chicago Artists Coalition and a DCASE Artist Grant recipient. Mauser earned an MFA from The University of Chicago and a BFA from Ringling College of Art and Design. Currently, she is a member of the artist-run gallery collective Tiger Strikes Asteroid and a Lecturer at The University of Chicago.

Sheila Majumdar is a Chicago-based artist, editor, and writer with an MA in art history and three years of experience on Jewelers Row. Working in the Publications department at the Art Institute of Chicago by day, she spends her free time daydreaming and realizing works in metal, words, and whatever else catches her imagination. Her rings are available through Etsy at IbisElement, and she takes on custom orders with relish.

Tobey Albright grew up in various small towns in central Illinois, and attended the Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida, where he received a BFA in fine arts and a minor in art history. In Florida, he managed and programmed a contemporary art gallery while contributing to regional arts publications as a writer. He later lived in Germany where he helped found Legwork—a collaborative which programs interventions within the fields of social, artistic and political practice. After relocating to Chicago in 2011, he has designed and developed a number of websites for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s exhibition and education programs. He currently lives and works in Chicago and is co-founder of Hour, a design studio.
