Please join Neubauer Family Assistant Professor Edgar Garcia, curator and writer Candice Hopkins, and artist Harold Mendez for a discussion of Mendez’s project The years now. Moderated by Katja Rivera, former Assistant Curator.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Edgar Garcia is the author of Signs of the Americas: A Poetics of Pictography, Hieroglyphs, and Khipu (University of Chicago Press, 2020) and Skins of Columbus: A Dream Ethnography (Fence Books, 2019). He is the Neubauer Family Assistant Professor of English at the University of Chicago, where he also teaches in the department of Creative Writing.

Candice Hopkins is senior curator of the Toronto Biennial of Art and co-curator of the 2018 SITE Santa Fe biennial, Casa Tomada. She was on the curatorial team for documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel, Germany, and a co-curator of the major exhibition Sakahàn: International Indigenous Art, Close Encounters: The Next 500 Years. She is a citizen of Carcross/Tagish First Nation.

Harold Mendez was included in Being: New Photography (2018) at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the 2017 Whitney Biennial as well as exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; and MoMA PS1, New York. His work has been reviewed in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Artforum, and frieze. He is currently based in Los Angeles.
