Jazz. The muse. The magic. The connectivity between jazz music and the visual artist manifests itself in an almost symbiotic relationship. The music not only elevates the vibrations of the artist’s work but many makers use the tenants of jazz to invigorate their creative processes while exploring the infinite possibilities of craft and culture.
It is in this spirit that the Jazz Institute of Chicago and South Side Community Art Center present these works in celebration of JICs first 50 years as we also pay homage to the creators and caretakers of the unstoppable legacy of the audible art form we call jazz.
Curated by Raymond A. Thomas, SUITE 1 (LEGACY) is a group exhibition by noted Chicago artists in the Dr. Margaret Burroughs gallery that will pay homage to the legends of Jazz while exploring the elevated frequencies and magic of the music they created.
Works by Lewis Achencach, Marcus Sterling Alleyne, Karen Alpert, Paul Branton, Marlene Campbell, Robert Lewis Clark, Roger Carter, Keith Conner, Makeba Kadem-DuBose, Gerald Griffin, Adam Guichard, Andre Guichard, Alan Emerson Hicks, Jesse Howard, Candice Hunter, Bryant Johnson, Jason E. Jones, Adedayo Laoye, Stasi Bobo-Ligon, Nicole Malcolm, Eric Skaggs, Pearlie Taylor, Norman Teague, Raymond A Thomas, Thomas Williams, and Arthur Wright
SUITE 2 (THE SOLOIST) in the upstairs Eldzier Cortor gallery will be a solo exhibition featuring the singular artistic genius of Arthur Wright and
his latest jazz inspired creations. Arthur is the featured visual artist of the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Jazz Institute of Chicago.
