Open Mic
Performances will promote tolerance, cultural understanding, equality and justice through the lens of the Afro-Puerto Rican and Muslim American communities’ history and diversity. The lineup of performers featured will include poetry, spoken word, song, music, comedy, and readings.
Performance
Bomba con Buya, Chicago’s preeminent bomba (Afro-Puerto Rican music) group will close the evening, celebrating the intersection of social justice and music in Puerto Rico. Their latest album “Southern Sessions” (2019) shows again their commitment to the preservation of the oldest forms of music from Puerto Rico. Throughout history Bomba has been present in the many fights that have taken, and are taking place in the island against slavery, corruption, and colonialism. Buya’s performance will highlight songs in their repertoire that bring light to this tradition.
