The Evolution of Kayla May and Dovie Golden
@ Elephant Room Gallery
704 S Wabash Ave., Chicago, IL 60605
Opening Saturday, October 19th, from 5PM - 9PM
On view through Sunday, November 3rd
Elephant Room Gallery is excited to present “The Evolution of Kayla May and Dovie Golden”, featuring brand new work. Both artists have created pieces that represent internal and external struggles and how those things can alter us. How do we deal with the things we can control and the things we cannot? How do our struggles manifest outwardly? How do we move forward and overcome the challenges we face? The result is a sort of evolution of not only the artists and their personal growth but also of the characters depicted in their paintings. Kayla May and Dovie Golden combine photorealistic portraits with cartoonish elements, each in their own very unique style. This is the first time the artists are showing together in a duo exhibition.
“The Evolution of Kayla May and Dovie Golden” opens on Saturday, October 19th from 5pm to 9pm at Elephant Room Gallery. The gallery is located at 704 S Wabash Ave. in the South Loop Neighborhood of Chicago and the exhibition runs through November 30th. Viewing appointments and more information can be found on the gallery’s website: www.elephantroomgallery.com
About Kayla May
Kayla Mahaffey “KaylaMay” is a Chicago based artist specializing in illustration and fine art. In 2012, she attended the American Academy of Art where she gained knowledge and strengthened her skills. Her work speaks about how living in our world can be tough and how making the best of it can simply be done by holding on to each other. Her inspiration is the world around her and her colorful paintings contain hints of whimsy and realism that tell a story of inner thoughts and society issues that sometimes go unheard. Being born and raised on the South side of Chicago, only ignited her love for all things art. Seeing the struggle and the support from the community made her work evolve to a concept that is personal to her. She continues to further her technique and creativity in her field in order to paint a beautiful picture of a new world for those who live in it.
About Dovie Golden
Brian Dovie Golden is a Chicago based artist who uses painting and drawing as an introspective tool for understanding issues of identity, race, gender and mental health, as well as an attempt to reconcile the harsh realities of life. His imagery is personal while realistically portraying men and women, all with cartoon style inclusions somewhere within the picture plane. Cartoony and sketchy elements depict angels, halos, devils, ropes and ribbons that bind and unwind, claws that cling, faces in crowds and huge teeth clamped like bear traps. Golden was born and raised in Chicago and studied Graphic Design/Multimedia Production at the International Academy of Design and Technology, earning his BFA in 2007.
