Dear Artists,
ARC is hosting another get-to-know-us-better event on Saturday, May 4th at 2:00 at our new gallery space (1463 W Chicago Ave). Come see the new space, the current show, meet the women who run ARC, and learn how to become a member one of the few remaining women’s cooperative galleries in the country. Plus, there will be snacks and mimosas!

History and Mission: ARC is a woman-run, cooperative, not-for-profit gallery, established 45 years ago with a mission to provide gallery space for women artists who were struggling to show work in more traditionally male-oriented venues. In the interim, the mission has expanded to support contemporary, emerging, naïve and unaffiliated artists, who are looking to find profession exhibition space, regardless of gender. Nevertheless, ARC continues to embrace a “feminist “perspective—a perspective that places trust in shared leadership, recognizes the rewards of volunteer commitment, and values the support and mentorship that members give to each other and to emerging artists. It is one of the few remaining such galleries in the country.

From a practical standpoint, here are the perks and responsibilities of membership:

Perks:
–Membership in an institution with a long and interesting feminist history in Chicago
–Participation in a shared mission to show exciting work and support the artists involved
–Membership in a diverse group of women artists who mentor and support each other.
–Opportunity to have a solo show at the gallery every 18-24 months.
–Opportunity to participate in the members’ show once a year.
–Opportunity to participate in any traveling shows the gallery does (most recent show was to Bulgaria)

Responsibilities:
–Dues: $60/month
–Sit at the gallery approximately one afternoon per month
–Participate in gallery events: meetings, openings, hanging of shows
–Participate in gallery management by working on a committee (examples: exhibition committee, fundraising committee, membership committee, etc)
–Help mentor student interns
