Marking the posthumous publication of Hannah Frank’s Frame by Frame: A Materialist Aesthetics of Animated Cartoons, this event celebrates the life and scholarship of the late scholar and artist. Frank was a singularly gifted writer, a nimble-minded researcher, and a joyful thinker. From cinematic discourse to feline curiosities, from high theory to the materiality of a single strip of film, Frank had a pronounced creative relationship to everything she considered. After earning her PhD from UChicago’s Department of Cinema and Media Studies in 2016 and teaching for a year at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, Frank died unexpectedly on August 28, 2017. With a screening of short films related to her work and presentations by friends, colleagues, and teachers, this event honors a friend, colleague, and brilliant scholar.

Co-presented by the Department of Cinema and Media Studies.
