Salons are stimulating affairs in which artists of diverse disciplines gather to showcase and expound on their work – and this season, two-time GRAMMY nominees the Spektral Quartet aims to usher the best of what the salon has to offer into the present.

In partnership with esteemed Chicago-based artist and organizer Theaster Gates, Spektral will spotlight some of the city’s most charismatic creatives in music, poetry, dance, and visual art in an environment that draws voices and traditions into dynamic conversation with one another. Notably, original work by poet/songwriter/performer avery r. young frames the event which includes Spektral Quartet presenting Quartet Movement by former Chicago Symphony composer-in-residence Samuel Adams, as well as a performance by Gates’s Black Monks of Mississippi. Composer/performer Tonia Ko remounts one of her most intriguing works to-date for bubble wrap before poet/activist Alyssa Martinez pulls the room in close with original verse. Spektral Quartet is ecstatic to welcome internationally-renowned footwork crew The Era to the Modern Salon – lions of this Chicago-born dance/music genre.

Unlike a typical concert, attendees will enjoy impromptu interactions with charismatic creatives from across the city: sharing reactions, asking questions, and having every bit of their brain lit up by the imagination and inventiveness in the room. Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails crafted by a local mixologist will keep salon-goers reinforced for this enticing exhibition of creativity from all across Chicago.

THIS EVENT WILL BE LIMITED TO 50 ATTENDEES

‘The Modern Salon: South Side Edition’ is made possible through the generosity of the Paul M. Angell Foundation, the Poetry Foundation, and the Rebuild Foundation.
