Aspect/Ratio is pleased to present On the Fence, a group exhibition that plays with the notion of contradiction and ambiguity. Whether it is from an exploration of materiality or of space, each artwork, in its own unique way invokes the quality of what it is to be on the fence. Nick Albertson, Iris Bernblum, Phyllis Bramson, Díaz Lewis, Matthew Girson, Cathy Hsiao, Kuras & MacKenzie, and Gonzalo Reyes Rodriguez are all included in On the Fence.
Nick Albertson (Chicago) investigates relationships between painting and photography processes through his lens- based practice. Iris Bernblum (Chicago) explores ambiguous and subversive relationships in her performative based practice. Phyllis Bramson (Chicago) investigates endearing relationships, creating a captivating and unique body of work throughout her venerable career. Díaz Lewis (Los Angeles) are a conceptually driven collaborative compromised of Alejandro Figueredo Díaz-Perera and Cara Megan Lewis. Matthew Girson (Chicago) creates delicate paintings that quietly reference deeply embedded histories and art history. Cathy Hsiao (Chicago) comes from a background in craft, weaving animal fibers dyed with plants. Kuras & MacKenzie are a collaborative between Christian Kuras (Manchester, England) and Duncan MacKenzie (Chicago) which is conceptually focused. Gonzalo Reyes Rodriguez (Chicago) is a research based artist whose work often reexamines historical relationships within a new time and context.
