ECLIPSING is a performance festival highlighting a variety of artists and healers who have found inspiration and strength in their own definitions of darkness. In dealing with the dark these artists, performers, musicians, and healers dissect power. ECLIPSING creates space for LGBTQIA+ artists and performers, namely trans & queer people of color, to cross boundaries between mediums, mobilize darkness within their works, and harness darkness’s metaphorical and metaphysical qualities.

ECLIPSING: death & transformation is honored to partner with Links Hall once again for a performance festival between January 31, 2019 and February 3, 2019. Performers such as AuMar, Rashayla Marie Brown, Ashon Crawley, J’Sun Howard, Yun Lee, Porsha Olayiwola, Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo, Jesús Hilario Reyes, Avery R. Young, and Ariel Zetina aim to shed light on the marginal, mysterious, spectacular spaces of night.

The festival offers a constellation of events and experiences including: a workshop series, a performance festival, collaborative public programming, and a film/video screening. These events converge around the first lunar eclipse of January 2019 and are hosted at venues across Chicago, including Links Hall.

About the ECLIPSING Team

Festival curator Amina Ross is an undisciplined creator and educator, working across media and shaping spaces that honor darkness and love, often through language and light in video installations, sculptural work and curatorial projects. Ross studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has presented work at Vox Populi, Links Hall and Hyde Park Art Center. Ross has spoken on panels and conducted workshops at College Arts Association Conference, Allied Media Conference, Black Artist Retreat, Threewalls and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A 2017 attendee of ACRE (Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions), Ross was also a member of the 2015-2016 cohort of Chicago Artist Coalition’s BOLT Residency. Ross is currently the 2017 to 2018 Links Hall curator-in-residence, co-runs F4F, a black and femme centering space in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago and is co-lead artist of Teen Creative Agency at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Ross’s commitment to loving, challenging spaces has manifested in the founding of 3rd Language (2011-2015), queer arts collective. As of late Ross’s commitment to spaces dedicated to creative learning manifests within Beauty Breaks (beautybreaks.info), a workshop series and participatory performance.

Festival project manager Madison Smith is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist and art historian exploring ideas of intimacy, flatness, and autobiography using mediums of fiber art and sculptural installation. Smith has managed a diverse range of public programs in partnership with institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, the Evanston Art Center, and LATITUDE | Chicago. Smith is a co-founder of Monarch Art and Wellness, assistant instructor of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Teen Lab program, and 2018 Programming Fellow at LATITUDE | Chicago. Since graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Art and Art History from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017, Smith has demonstrated a commitment to emerging artists and creative platforms in Chicago, IL.
