Tara Vancil: Decentralizing the Web

@ Make City (ICNC)

320 N Damen Ave, Chicago, IL 60612

Opening Thursday, January 31st, from 7PM - 8PM

On view through Thursday, January 31st

One of the web’s greatest features is its potential to be extremely decentralized. While possible in theory, in practice this isn’t always the case. Web sites live on servers, and these servers are increasingly being controlled by a handful of digital monopolies. But fear not! People like Tara Vancil are working to democratize and decentralize the Web. She’s the co-founder of Blue Link Labs, the team behind Beaker, a peer-to-peer Web browser, and Hashbase, a decentralized cloud service for hosting files. Join us as we discuss contemporary cloud empires and how we can reconfigure and reimagine our digital environments with new technologies based on the foundational ideas of the Internet.

Doors open at 6:30 PM
Conversation begins at 7:00 PM

Tara Vancil is the co-founder of Blue Link Labs, the team behind Beaker, a peer-to-peer Web browser, and Hashbase, a cloud peer service for files hosted with the Dat protocol. Before starting Blue Link Labs, she worked at Cloudflare, where she helped build their Apps platform, and before that she spent time at the Recurse Center, an amazing community for programmers. She grew up in rural northern Michigan, but currently resides in Austin, TX.

Data Rules Everything Around Me (D.R.E.A.M.) is a FREE & OPEN conversation series facilitated by Nick Briz & Jon Satrom. Artists, writers, developers, and other cultural producers discuss their research and perspectives on the data that fuels the systems that run our world.

This event is presented by Mozilla in partnership with Netizen. Thank you to Make City for hosting this event.
