The world is impossible to understand: politics, patriarchy, economics, world leaders, climate change, war, famine, racism, ageism, sexism, betrayal, corruption, cruelty, white supremacy, anti-semitism, blatant stupidity, hatred, ignorance, pollution, de-foresting, guns, walls, more war… So, let’s dance…
This weekend workshop is research and development towards an evolution of the contemporaneous nature of dance, somatics and improvisation.
The word Somatics comes from the word Soma, defined as 1.the body as distinct from the soul, mind, or psyche and 2.an intoxicating drink prepared from a plant and used in Vedic ritual, believed to be the drink of the gods. This expresses a poetics of performance practice – an entering into the “facts” of anatomy and physiology of the body, the instrument of the artist; and also the “fiction”, using the lens of our great imaginations, revealing and unwinding hidden narratives and new inventions. We will widen the margins around our physical practice to encounter the subtle movements of our bodies, dimensionalize them into gesture and shape; amplify our voices as tools for furthering the dance, to support text and words, to sing. We will write and draw and hang the transparencies in the space to layer our experience as intimate, shared and in real time, discovering creative solutions to our actions in the world.
