Please join us for a Gallery Talk with artist, Dorothy Straughter whose work is part of the group exhibition, ‘Quilt + Resist: Art, Politics, Storytelling’ juried by Marcia Grubb and Adelia Moore and on display from November 9 to December 1, 2018.
An Occupational Therapist with a master’s degree in biology, Dorothy Straughter’s introduction to quilting by a friend in 2014 resulted in a historical journey that is woven through her numerous works which include the Underground Railroad, Great Migration, and American History Quilts© (Negrobilia). All of her quilts have fronts and backs fashioned and assembled in painstaking detail.
Dorothy Straughter will share interesting highlights from her historical research related to her quilts which each tell their story from a particular part of American history. Imagery depicted in her quilts are informed by continuous research at the Stony Island Arts Bank which has equipped her with historical perspectives difficult to find in other venues.
Dorothy Straughter’s work has been exhibited at venues throughout Chicago including the Beverly Art Center, Hyde Park Art Center, the Art Institute of Chicago, at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Midwest Buddhist Temple.
The Gallery Talk with Dorothy Straughter on Saturday, December 1, 2018 from 2 to 4 p.m. takes place on the final day of WMG’s group exhibition, ‘Quilt + Resist: Art, Politics, Storytelling.’ On view are two and three-dimensional pieces in traditional and non-traditional format by 38 artists.
